At Liberty Middle School, we offer counseling services to all students to address their academic, social, emotional and developmental needs. Hanover County Public Schools adheres to the American School Counselor Association National Model, which is a framework for a comprehensive, data-driven school counseling program.
Through classroom lessons and small group and individual counseling, our school counselors meet with and counsel individuals or groups of students to help them achieve personal growth and overcome obstacles to learning. Our school counselors also assist students with course selections, provide career information, and guide in planning for a prospective career and further education. They serve as a liaison between the school and the home and provide parents with information on the student’s progress in school.
Counseling Services
Our school counselors offer counseling services to all students both individually and in groups. These services are designed to address the academic, social, emotional, and developmental needs of students. Small group counseling topics are based on student need but may include:
- Coping Skills
- Self Concept
- Book Club
- Study Skills
- Friendship/Social Skills
- Family Changes
- Coping With the Loss of a Loved One
Classroom Lessons
Our school counselors conduct a variety of classroom lessons throughout the year. Lessons to address personal and social issues are based on grade-level needs but may include mindfulness, mental health awareness, coping skills, diversity, and conflict resolution. Academic planning lessons take place in December to discuss courses for the upcoming year and graduation requirements. Our career counselor, Ms. Thompson, leads career lessons to explore career interests, identify students’ strengths, and develop college and career readiness skills.
Coordination
Our school counselors coordinate a variety of special programs that support our school community. These may include food insecurity programs, linking families to community resources, holiday assistance programs, and family engagement opportunities.
